Gliwice, Poland – KP Labs announces the official launch of Smart Mission Lab, a platform that redefines how AI models and onboard data processing are developed and tested for space missions. Co-financed by ESA InCubed, an Earth Observation Programme managed by ESA Φ-lab, Smart Mission Lab provides remote access to high-performance Data Processing Units (DPUs) built by KP Labs, allowing engineers, researchers, and mission planners to develop and validate their software on actual hardware before mission launch, removing traditional barriers to testing and ensuring mission readiness.
Smart Mission Lab provides a secure and controlled environment for AI and data processing development, ensuring that engineers can safely test and optimise their software without the risks associated with real space missions. Unlike traditional testing approaches that require months of procurement and configuration, Smart Mission Lab grants users access to its space-grade DPUs within 48 hours, significantly accelerating mission development. By offering a dedicated infrastructure, the platform allows teams to work in a stable environment that mirrors real mission conditions while maintaining full control over system variables. This ensures that AI models and edge processing algorithms are evaluated under consistent and repeatable conditions, allowing for precise performance benchmarking and optimisation before deployment.

"At KP Labs, we understand the challenges engineers face when preparing edge data processing solutions for space—long procurement times, unexpected limitations, unclear outcomes and complex validation processes. Having encountered these obstacles firsthand, we designed Smart Mission Lab as a practical, reliable, and immediately accessible solution for onboard computing testing. By continuously expanding the platform’s capabilities, integrating new DPUs, and applying insights gained from past space activities, we ensure that engineers have access to a streamlined environment for the development and validation of edge processing with ease,"
says Helena Milevych, Head of Products at KP Labs.
Smart Mission Lab serves a broad range of space industry professionals by accelerating edge processing development and testing.
- Satellite integrators and mission operators can validate AI-driven decision-making before launch, minimising risks and improving mission reliability.
- Earth Observation and remote sensing companies can refine hyperspectral and multispectral data processing for in-orbit execution, ensuring efficient data transfer to the ground stations.
- Algorithm developers gain a testing ground to deploy and optimise various models under real mission constraints, securing seamless integration into autonomous space systems.
"Smart Mission Lab is not just a validation tool—it’s a gateway to more informed decisions, optimised performance, and a smarter approach to edge processing in space"
- adds Helena Milevych.
